Gaba Cannal – Yaba Ye Ft. Zano, Villo Soul & The Bless
Some titles sound like a greeting across a crowded room, and Gaba Cannal uses one on Yaba Ye, featuring Zano, Villo Soul and The Bless, on uYena, Pt. 2.
Nigerians will smile at the first word. Yaba is a well known part of Lagos, home to the tech crowd, the old market and a lot of traffic stories. That is only a coincidence of spelling, since this title sits in a South African context, and I would not claim to know what it means in the original language. Still, the overlap is the kind of thing that makes listeners from two countries talk about the same record.
The sound of the phrase is lively and easy to repeat, which is half of what a dance title needs. Three guests share the credits. Zano and Villo Soul are the fresh names here, while The Bless returns from another track on the album. I will not describe the beat or the delivery, since I cannot vouch for those details and your own ears are the fair judge.
It fits the group chat that keeps arguing over what the words mean while the speaker keeps playing.
