Kashcoming – SPEND SPEND Ft. Mavo

Any Nigerian who has received an alert knows how fast it can disappear. Salary lands on the twenty-eighth, and by the weekend it has become jollof, a fresh outfit, a round of drinks and a transfer to a cousin with an urgent problem. Repeating the word makes it sound like a chant, almost like someone throwing notes in the air at an owambe and daring anybody to stop them.

The doubled title also carries a little humour. It sounds like a boast, but it can just as easily be a confession from someone who knows the account balance is about to look sad. Spending is celebration for some people and stress for others, and the same two words can hold both moods. Mavo is the credited guest, and the track sits on the album of the same name, so the idea is clearly the centre of the project. I will not describe the beat, the vocals or the production here, since I cannot vouch for those details and your own ears are the fair judge.

It suits the end of the month, when the alert has landed, the plans are big and tomorrow can wait.
