Mr Thela – Midnight Dream
A title that sounds like a secret shared after the party ends: Mr Thela opens the INTSIKA (KING OF GQOM) album with Midnight Dream, a record that has no featured guest.
Midnight is the hour when the day finally lets go. The phone stops ringing, the compound goes quiet and your mind starts wandering to the things you never say in daylight. A dream at that hour is rarely small. It is the business you keep planning, the person you keep thinking about, the life you want to build once the bills are settled. Every Nigerian who has stayed up counting plans after a long day knows exactly what that feels like.
Gqom is a genre built on the night, and the title fits that world naturally. The sound grew out of Durban and has always been tied to dark rooms, loud speakers and crowds moving together after sundown. I will not describe the drums, the bass or the arrangement here, since I cannot vouch for those details and your own ears are the fair judge. What the name of Midnight Dream tells you is the mood, something dreamy and a little mysterious.
It suits the late drive home, the quiet room with the speaker low and the hours when your imagination is louder than your worries.
