Mr Thela – INTSIKA (KING OF GQOM) Album

Promise

Crown talk is serious business in South African dance music, and puts his on the table with INTSIKA (KING OF GQOM), an album title that announces its own rank.

Start with the second half. Calling yourself king of anything is a claim people will test, and Nigerians know how that goes. Every genre here has someone wearing a title, and the argument over who deserves it never really ends. Gqom itself grew out of Durban, a sound tied to dark rooms, heavy speakers and crowds that move together after sundown, so a producer attaching the word king to it is stepping into a conversation fans take personally.

The first word adds a different feel. I would leave a perfect translation to those who speak the language, but it reads as a title of respect, the sort of word used for someone considered a pillar or a backbone. Put beside the bracketed crown, it suggests a project built around standing and legacy more than a single hit. I will not describe the tracklist, the production or the guest list here, since I cannot vouch for those details and your own ears are the fair judge. What the name of INTSIKA (KING OF GQOM) tells you is the ambition, a full body of work that wants to be taken seriously.

Albums with this kind of title belong to the long night, when the speaker is loud, the room is packed and somebody in the corner insists the king has arrived.
