Mr Thela – Funky Nights

The plural is the interesting part. It does not talk about one night but many, the whole habit of living for the evening. Anybody who has had a season of weekends planned around music, friends and the late taxi home knows the pattern. Those nights become memories, and the group chat keeps referring to them long after the outfits have been forgotten.

For a gqom producer the title feels natural, since the genre has always belonged to after-dark crowds. I will not describe the drums, the bass or the arrangement, because I cannot vouch for those details and your own ears are the fair judge. The word funky also suggests playfulness, a lighter side to a sound that is often heavy.

It belongs to the Friday when the week is over, the speaker is loud and the evening has barely begun.
