Mr Thela – Dubane O’clock
The clock gets a playful nickname on Dubane O’clock, a solo record from Mr Thela on the INTSIKA (KING OF GQOM) album.
The first part of the title looks like a place or a nickname, and the second part turns it into a time of day. Some hours belong to certain people and certain spots, and every friend group has its own version. In Nigeria we have the evening that starts at the joint after work, the time the suya man opens, or the hour when the street comes alive and everyone suddenly appears.
That makes the title feel like a local joke, the sort of thing only a particular community fully understands. Records like that tend to travel because outsiders become curious about the reference. I will not describe the production or the arrangement, since I cannot vouch for those details and your own ears are the fair judge.
It belongs to the hour when your own crew gathers, the plans are already made and nobody is looking at the time.
