Mr Thela – Departure Ft. Asambeni

The word brings airports to mind, the board with flashing times, the long hugs near the gate and the trolley that never rolls straight. For many Nigerian families it is an emotional word, since so many have a relative who travelled abroad for school or work. The sadness of leaving sits next to the hope of what waits at the other end.

It can also point to a different kind of leaving, such as walking away from a job, a relationship or an old habit. Whichever reading you choose, the title suggests change. Asambeni is the only guest credited, so the record keeps a close feel. I will not describe the sound or the arrangement, since I cannot vouch for those details and your own ears are the fair judge.

Play it on the day somebody leaves, or on the day you decide to leave something behind yourself.
