LUCKI – Replica’s N Capper’s
The title is about fakes, and LUCKI sets it up on replica’s n capper’s, a record from the Last Laugh archive tape that puts two kinds of pretending in one line.
Every Nigerian knows the first kind. Walk through any big market and somebody will offer you first copy, grade A, almost original. A replica is a fake that wants to be believed, and plenty of people have worn one with full confidence. We have a whole vocabulary for it.
The second kind is the capper. Cap means a lie, and a capper is the person telling it. We have our own versions of that character, the friend who yarns dust about owning three cars or the guy whose stories grow every time you meet him.
Putting replica’s n capper’s together in one title is a smart pairing, because fake clothes and fake stories come from the same place. Both are about image, about wanting people to think you have more than you do. A clever listener will see that the title is making one point from two directions.
LUCKI is a Chicago rapper, and fashion and appearance matter a lot in that scene, so a song about spotting fakes makes sense for him. It is the sort of subject that works on anybody who has ever looked at a designer bag and quietly checked the stitching.
