LUCKI – 60 Mgs
A number as a title tells you plenty. LUCKI calls this Last Laugh archive tape record 60 mgs, and it reads like a dosage printed on a box before any music plays.
Anybody who has bought drugs from a chemist in Nigeria has read a label like that. Paracetamol 500 mg, antibiotics, cough mixture. The unit is boring, official and measured, which is exactly why it is interesting when rap borrows it as shorthand for chasing a particular kind of high.
The contrast is where the title gets its character. A medical unit comes from a world of caution and instructions, yet a rapper naming a song 60 mgs is stepping into the opposite world of excess and escape. The two ideas sit badly together, and that tension is probably the point. Nothing needs to be spelled out for listeners to get it.
LUCKI is from Chicago and works in a hazy, melodic strain of rap, so a title like this fits the mood he is usually tied to. Whether the record leans dark or drifting is for each listener to decide, but the subject is not hard to place.
In Nigeria, where the conversation around codeine and over the counter pills has been loud for years, it lands differently. The same number can be a casual flex in one ear and a serious warning in another. A thoughtful listener will carry both thoughts at once.
