Omah Lay – WATER SPIRIT
Water carries a lot of belief in Nigerian culture, and Omah Lay taps into it with WATER SPIRIT, a record on the CLARITY OF MIND (EXTENDED) album.
Many of us grew up hearing stories about the river, the sea and the beings said to live beneath them. Some stories are frightening, others are respectful, and Mami Wata figures in more than a few of them. Mention water spirit in a room and somebody will have an uncle who swears he saw something by the lagoon.
The title also works as a feeling. Water is calm and dangerous, soothing and powerful, and a spirit connected to it suggests a person who is hard to hold, who moves and changes shape. That could describe a lover, a mood or a force inside oneself. Omah Lay is from Port Harcourt, a city shaped by creeks and waterways, so the imagery sits close to home. I will not describe the production or the vocals, since I cannot vouch for those details.
It fits the late hour near the water, when the air is cool and your mind starts to wander.
