Omah Lay – ARTIFICIAL HAPPINESS
Smiling for the camera while the inside says otherwise: Omah Lay puts that contradiction into the title of ARTIFICIAL HAPPINESS, a record from the album CLARITY OF MIND (EXTENDED).
Everybody knows this feeling. It is the friend who posts the best pictures and cannot sleep at night, the colleague who laughs loudest in the office and goes quiet in the bus, the person who answers I am fine so quickly that nobody asks again. In Nigeria, where we are taught to hold our heads up no matter what, performing joy has almost become a survival skill.
That is what makes the title so sharp. Happiness is meant to be the real thing, and the word artificial exposes the costume. It could point to a party, a relationship or a substance, and each reading carries a different kind of sadness. Omah Lay is a Port Harcourt-born singer who has often been linked with moody, reflective records, and the album name suggests the same search for calm. I will not describe the beat, the production or the vocal delivery here, since I cannot vouch for those details and your own ears are the fair judge.
It belongs to the late drive home after a night of pretending, when the speaker is low and the mask finally comes off.
