UZONDI – UFUN’UKUNGITEMA

Promise

A title that talks straight to you is hard to ignore. UFUN’UKUNGITEMA does exactly that, and it comes from on the WENKULUNKULU album.

The wording is a direct address in isiZulu, with a “you” and a “me” built right into it. Somebody wants something from the speaker, or wants to push the speaker into something. That setup puts the song in the middle of a confrontation before a single line is sung.

Everyday life has plenty of people like that. The friend who keeps inviting you to what you have already declined. The old flame who appears the moment you start doing well. The relative who suddenly remembers your phone number when money is in the air. It is a very familiar kind of pressure, and the title names it without any decoration.

What I find interesting is the balance such a title suggests. The speaker could be annoyed, amused or just done with the whole thing. It could even be directed at a temptation rather than a person, the voice inside that keeps whispering. That uncertainty is useful, because it lets the listener decide who the “you” is in their own life.

People who have had to hold their ground, whether in love, at work or in the street, will probably recognise the mood. UFUN’UKUNGITEMA reads like a line you finally say after being quiet for far too long, and there is a little satisfaction in that.
