THULUBUKE – Inselela

Promise

Small words can sting more than long speeches, and picks a sharp one with Inselela, from the INHLABATHI EPHALISHINI album.

In isiZulu slang, the word is used for a person who is a bit clever or cunning, someone who knows how to work a situation. Sometimes it is a compliment and sometimes a gentle accusation, depending on who says it and how they smile.

Nigerians know this character. Every area has the guy who always finds a way, who gets what he wants with charm and timing, and who somehow never pays for anything. People admire him and distrust him in equal measure. He appears in family stories, office gist and street comedy.

I will not pretend to describe production details I cannot confirm, but a one-word title like this suggests a record with personality, probably built around a character or an attitude. It leaves the listener to decide whether the person in the song is a hero or a rascal.

That ambiguity is the charm. Everybody has met one, and many have secretly wanted to be one. When a friend smirks and says Inselela about someone at a party, you know a story is about to follow.

Anyone who enjoys character sketches, or has dealt with a smooth talker, will see themselves here. It suits long gist sessions and evenings where everybody has a story about the cleverest person they know.
