THULUBUKE – Ukuzala Kuyefana

Promise

Every family has the argument about children, and steps into it with Ukuzala Kuyefana, from the INHLABATHI EPHALISHINI album.

The title says that giving birth is not the same for everyone, or that having children differs from person to person. It points to the fact that two parents can raise children very differently, and that two children from the same home can turn out nothing alike.

Nigerians will recognise this immediately. Within one family you can have the child who studied hard, the one who runs a business and the one who is still finding his way, and relatives compare them at every gathering. Mothers often say they raised all of them the same way, and the results still surprise everybody.

I will not pretend to describe production details I cannot confirm, but a title built on this observation suggests a reflective, story-led record, closer to a conversation at the back of the house than a party song. It leaves room for pride, regret and plain wonder.

That is what makes the idea so universal. Nobody controls how a child turns out, and nobody enjoys being compared. When a friend quietly says Ukuzala Kuyefana after a family argument, they usually mean they have stopped expecting things to be fair.

Anyone who is a parent, a sibling or simply a child who felt compared will understand the mood. It suits quiet evenings after a family visit, when you think about how differently everybody turned out.
