Mr JazziQ – Chommie Angeke Ft. Shoes Meister, Thesiix & A.W.O
Friendship, with a twist, is the subject here. Chommie Angeke is the new Mr JazziQ record on the Coolest in the City album, with Shoes Meister, Thesiix and A.W.O featured.
Chommie is South African slang for a close friend, a buddy you trust. Angeke is Zulu for will not, or can never. Put them together and the title sounds like a statement about a friend who will not do something, perhaps a friend who will never leave, or one who will never be swayed. The exact meaning is open, and that makes it fun.
Most of us have had a chommie like that. Someone who will not let you walk home alone, who will not gossip about you, or who simply refuses to let you fall apart. I cannot say which reading the record intends, but Chommie Angeke is a title that invites you to think of your own person.
The blend of English-flavoured slang and Zulu is also a nice detail, because it reflects how people actually talk in many South African cities. Nobody picks one language and stays there. It is a record for the friend group, and probably best shared with them.
