Kirk Franklin – This Time Ft. GloRilla
Gospel and rap rarely share a hook this easily on paper, but Kirk Franklin brings GloRilla into the mix on This Time, from I Am What I Am.
Two small words, and so much hope packed inside. Saying this time means there was a last time, and probably a time before that. It is what a person says after failing, trying again and deciding that the story will end differently now. Every Nigerian who has retaken an exam, restarted a business or forgiven someone once more understands that sentence.
The guest is an unusual choice, and that is part of the appeal. GloRilla comes from the Memphis rap scene, a world far from the choir stand, yet Kirk Franklin has always enjoyed crossing those lines. He has a long record of inviting artists from outside gospel into his songs, so the move fits his history. How the two voices share the space is something I will leave for listeners to discover, because I would not want to describe what I cannot honestly vouch for.
The theme of trying again is one nearly everyone shares, and that is why it carries so far. It suits the morning after a bad week, when you still decide to get up and go again.
