Kirk Franklin – Stay
One word, a lot of feeling: Stay arrives from Kirk Franklin on the I Am What I Am album, with no guest on the credits.
Stay is a request that can be made to a person, to God or to a feeling. A partner is asked to stay after an argument. A parent is asked to stay a little longer when the visit is ending. A believer asks the presence of God to stay when the service is over and the real world begins. Few words carry such different kinds of longing.
That is why the title is clever. Without extra explanation, it makes you think of someone you do not want to lose. Every listener will fill in a different face. It could be a friend who travelled abroad, a relative who has passed or a faith that feels shaky. The single word does the work and leaves the personal details to you.
Because the record carries no featured name, the attention stays with the lead artist. I will not describe the sound in detail, since I cannot honestly vouch for it, so the arrangement is yours to judge.
A title like this belongs in the quiet part of the evening, when the day is done and the only thing left to say is please do not go.
