Fredo Bang – Shoot Dat
Say what you like about street rap titles, but Shoot Dat sets the mood before anything plays. This is Fredo Bang, and the record sits on his Laugh Now Cry Later album.
The word shoot has a double life, and that is the interesting part. In street talk it can point to violence, which is the obvious reading for a rapper from Baton Rouge. In everyday Nigerian conversation, though, we say shoot your shot when a guy finally walks up to a woman he has been admiring for months. Same word, two completely different stakes.
Which meaning wins depends on the writing, and I would not want to pretend to know the exact angle before you hear it for yourself. What I will say is that Shoot Dat is a very direct title. It is spoken the way people actually talk, with the slang spelling intact, and it gives the record a conversational edge from the first second.
Titles like this work because they sound like something shouted across a room or typed in a quick message. They do not try to explain themselves. On an album that already has laughter and tears in its name, a blunt phrase like this fits well, and it is the kind of record people will argue about at the car park before they agree on what it means.
