Europe – The Devils Back

The idea of the devil coming back is easy to understand even without taking the word literally. People often describe old problems as demons when they return, especially habits, conflicts or memories they thought they had finally dealt with. The title therefore has room to work as a metaphor for anything that refuses to stay in the past.

The Devils Back appears on Come This Madness, and its wording fits naturally with the tension suggested by the album title. There is something almost frustrating about the phrase because it sounds like a warning. Just when you think a problem has gone away, there it is again, asking to be dealt with all over.

That situation happens in ordinary life more often than people admit. Someone may leave a bad habit for months and suddenly find themselves doing it again. Two people can settle an argument and later fall into the same disagreement. A difficult memory can return because something small brought it back. Progress is not always a straight line, and sometimes old issues show up simply to remind us that they were never fully resolved.

The Devils Back has that sense of recurrence at its centre. The title does not promise an easy answer. It simply captures the uncomfortable moment when something familiar and unwanted returns. For anyone who has had to deal with the same problem more than once, that idea can feel very real. Some battles disappear quickly, while others require more patience than we expected.
