Europe – The Angels Must Have Flown

Angels are often connected with protection, goodness and a sense that someone is watching over us. Saying they must have flown creates a feeling of absence. It sounds like somebody looking around at what has happened and wondering where all that goodness went. The phrase has a slightly mysterious quality because it does not explain exactly what changed.

The song is part of Come This Madness, and the title sits comfortably beside the album’s more troubled language. There is an obvious contrast between angels and madness. One suggests peace or protection, while the other points towards disorder. That contrast gives the track an interesting place within the project without needing to attach a single fixed meaning to it.

The Angels Must Have Flown could speak to a relationship that has lost its warmth, a place that no longer feels like home, or a period of life that has become harder than anyone expected. The idea of angels leaving can simply be a poetic way of saying that something good is no longer present.

That is probably the most relatable part of the title. People notice absence more clearly when they remember what used to be there. A peaceful home can feel different after conflict. A friendship can feel strange after trust is damaged. A familiar place can suddenly seem unfamiliar. Sometimes you cannot point to one exact moment when everything changed. You only know that something has gone.
