Ayaka Ozubulu – Na One Day
Nigerians have a way of saying a lot in four words, and Na One Day from Ayaka Ozubulu is a Pidgin title that says it with a smile.
Anyone who has waited on a promotion, a visa, a wedding date or a debt to be repaid knows the line. It is what you tell yourself, and what your friends tell you, when things have been slow for too long. Na one day your own go come. The phrase carries patience and a little stubbornness together, and it works as comfort and as a warning to anybody who has been doubting you.
What I like is how ordinary the language is. Pidgin is how many of us talk when we are being most honest, so a title in it feels closer to a conversation than a statement. The record shares its name with the album, Na One Day, so the whole project leans on this idea as its centre. I will not guess how the song is built, since a title like this could point to something hopeful or something defiant. Ayaka Ozubulu also carries a name that points to Ozubulu, a town in Anambra State, though I will leave the details of the sound to the listener.
It suits the evening after a long wait, when nothing has changed yet and you still decide to believe it will.
