Anderson.Paak – Godfather II Ft. Cordae

Most people hear the name and think of a film where the second part is praised as strongly as the first, sometimes more. It is a rare case where the follow-up earned its own respect. Using it as a song title is a bold way to say you want to be taken seriously, that you are not a small player.

In Nigerian conversation, the word godfather has its own meaning too. We use it for the powerful figure behind the scenes, the person who can open doors or close them. Whether it points to the film, to politics or to a mentor, the title carries authority. Few words bring that much baggage so quickly.

The record sits on Heavy Is The Crown, with Cordae joining Anderson.Paak. Godfather II suits a pairing of a rapper and a singer who started as a drummer, because it gives both of them a heavy theme to work around.

It is a title for the moment when you decide to stop asking for a seat and start building your own table.
