Anderson.Paak – 58th Floor Ft. Cordae
Height has always been a flex in Lagos and Abuja, so 58th Floor from Anderson.Paak and Cordae already sounds like a statement before anything plays.
Think about what a number like fifty-eight does to a title. Most of us have never been that high up in a building. You imagine glass, a quiet lift ride that takes forever, and a view where the traffic below looks like toy cars. It is a place where you can see everything, and also a place where it is easy to feel far from the ground.
That contrast is what I enjoy about the idea. 58th Floor can mean success, a new address or a new level of ambition, but it can also mean distance, the loneliness that sometimes comes with being at the top. Same view, two different moods.
The record sits on Heavy Is The Crown, and Cordae joins Anderson.Paak on it. Anderson.Paak started out as a drummer before he became a singer and rapper, and Cordae is a rapper, so the pairing looks like two people who speak the same language from different angles.
It is the sort of title that suits late-night thinking, when you are looking out of a window at the city lights and wondering how far you have come and how far you still want to go.
