Europe – Nothing Can Follow This
There is a certain confidence in the title Nothing Can Follow This, and Europe uses that phrase to suggest that something has reached a point where whatever comes next may struggle to match it.
The wording is interesting because it can be read in two completely different ways. It could be a compliment, meaning a moment was so strong that nothing afterwards could compare. It could also carry a darker feeling, as if something has happened that leaves no obvious way forward. That uncertainty makes the title more interesting than a simple statement of satisfaction.
The song closes out the list of tracks from Come This Madness, and its title has a finality that suits that position. Nothing Can Follow This sounds like someone drawing a line under an experience. After everything that has happened, there is a feeling that the next chapter cannot simply continue in the same way.
There is also a familiar human habit behind the phrase. We sometimes look at a moment in our lives and decide that it was the best, worst, happiest or hardest thing we will ever experience. Usually, life proves more complicated than that. Another moment comes along, sometimes completely unexpected, and changes the way we understand what happened before.
That is why the title can work as both certainty and reflection. Maybe nothing really can follow. Maybe the statement only feels true at that particular moment. Either way, it captures the feeling of standing at the end of something significant and not knowing what could possibly come next. That is a very human place to find yourself, especially after an experience that has changed the way you see things.
