UZONDI – UZOMMELA YINI?

Promise

Some titles are really questions asked to somebody who is not in the room. UZOMMELA YINI? is one, and it comes from on the WENKULUNKULU album.

The ending gives the game away. In isiZulu, “yini” is a word for what or why, so the title leaves the speaker waiting on an answer. It is aimed at one person, and the tone could be anything from sincere curiosity to sharp frustration. That is the beauty of a short question. It carries a lot of attitude without needing to explain it.

We all know the situation. You are watching someone make a decision that you think is wrong, and you keep asking them the same thing in different ways. Why are you doing this? What do you want out of it? People who have had that conversation with a sibling, a friend or a partner will recognise the energy immediately.

I like that questions in song titles pull the listener in as a participant. You are not simply being told something. You are invited to think about what your own answer would be, or who you would like to ask. A statement closes the conversation, but a question keeps it going for the length of the song and long after.

For anyone who has ever demanded answers from a person that kept quiet, UZOMMELA YINI? is a title that speaks plainly to that frustration.
