Fredo Bang – Ding A Ling (Interlude)

Promise

Every good album has a few small doors between the big rooms, and Ding A Ling (Interlude) looks like one of them. It comes from and sits on Laugh Now Cry Later.

The title itself is fun to think about. Ding a ling is the sound of a phone, a doorbell or one of those bicycle bells you still hear in the neighbourhood. It suggests an interruption, somebody calling at the wrong time or the right time. Most of us know what it is like when a call lights up the screen and the mood of the whole evening changes.

Interludes also have a job that people often overlook. They give the listener space between heavier songs, and they let an album breathe before the next story starts. Ding A Ling (Interlude) is placed in that role, and on a project that plays with the contrast between laughing and crying, a short pause like this can matter more than it looks.

I would not judge it the way you judge a full single. Nobody is waiting for a big hook from a track like this. The better question is whether it sets up what comes next, and that is how interludes should be heard, as part of the walk through the album. Play it in order, and let it do its quiet work.
