Vikiconsi – Jikamajika

Promise

Some titles move before the music does, and picks a restless one with Jikamajika, from the Waqome album.

The word sounds like turning, spinning or twisting about, the kind of motion that does not settle in one place. It has a playful rhythm when you say it, almost like a dance step written down. Even a listener who does not speak isiZulu can hear the bounce in it.

Nigerians love words like that. We have phrases that imitate movement, like someone turning round and round at a party or a person who cannot keep still when the beat drops. Such words carry energy before any instrument comes in, and they stick in the mind because you can almost feel them in your feet.

I will not pretend to describe production details I cannot confirm, but a title built on motion suggests a record meant for the floor, or at least for tapping a hand on the table. It also leaves room for another reading, a life that keeps turning, with plans changing and people circling back to where they started.

That double picture is what I like most. A dance and a changing life can both be described with the same word. When somebody asks you what Jikamajika means at a party, the best answer might be to show them with a little twirl.

Anyone who enjoys a lively crowd, or has ever felt life spinning faster than expected, will understand the mood. It suits weekend nights, wedding receptions and any room where nobody can sit still.
