Umfana Wekhansela – Abantwana Bethu

Promise

Children are the centre of most family stories, and closes the Ngilindele Wena album with Abantwana Bethu.

The title means our children, and the plural possessive says a lot. It speaks of children as a shared responsibility, belonging to a family, a community and a nation, not only to one household. In many African communities, raising a child involves everybody, from aunties to neighbours to church elders.

Nigerians know this well. A neighbour will scold your child without asking, a relative will pay a school fee, and a whole street will celebrate a graduation. The phrase carries pride, worry and hope, since everyone wants the next generation to do better than the last.

I will not pretend to describe production details or lyrics I cannot confirm, but ending an album on a title about children suggests a gentle, hopeful closing note, perhaps a message about protecting and guiding the young. It makes sense after a project about waiting, since children are often what people wait and work for.

There is a quiet seriousness in it. By the time a friend says Abantwana Bethu in a thoughtful moment, they are probably thinking about the future they hope to leave behind.

Anyone who is a parent, an aunty or simply cares about the next generation will see themselves in the idea. It suits family evenings and reflective moments.
