Skepta – Pandora’s Bo

Promise

Anyone who knows the old Greek story will smile at the name before a single bar arrives. Pandora’s Bo from plays on a tale about a box that should never have been opened.

Pandora’s box is a phrase people use all the time, even in Nigerian conversation. We say someone has opened a can of worms, or that a matter should be left alone because it will cause trouble. The story says that once the lid is lifted, whatever was inside cannot be put back. That is a powerful thing to build a title around.

What caught my eye is the twist at the end. The word is cut short, so box becomes Bo, and that small change makes it feel personal, like a nickname or a bit of London slang. Skepta is a British rapper of Nigerian descent, from Tottenham, and a title that plays with language this way fits someone who has always treated words as a toy as well as a tool. Pandora’s Bo sounds like a joke and a warning at the same time.

That mix is very familiar to us. Plenty of Nigerian parents have said “don’t open that matter” while trying not to laugh, and plenty of us have opened it anyway. The title leaves open what is inside, whether it is secrets, trouble, success or just a lot of noise, and each listener can fill the gap with their own story.

It suits the moment before you press send on a message you know will change everything, with your thumb hovering and your mind already regretting it.
