Okmalumkoolkat – Top 5 Milano
Lists are an old way of settling arguments, and Okmalumkoolkat borrows the format on Top 5 Milano, from the iTheku eThekwini album.
The title sounds like a ranking, the kind of thing people compile about their favourite players, restaurants or songs. Add Milano, the Italian city known for fashion and football, and the picture gets stylish. It suggests taste, status and a little bit of showing off.
Nigerians love a ranking. Ask a group of friends for the top five footballers, rappers or jollof spots and the conversation will last all evening. Everyone has a list, nobody agrees, and the argument is half the fun.
I will not pretend to describe production details I cannot confirm, but a title built around fashion and lists suggests swagger. It sounds like a person describing his own best qualities, or the best things in his world, with a straight face and a smile hiding behind it.
The charm lies in how confident it is. Putting yourself on a list is a bold move, and putting a foreign city beside it adds style. By the time somebody asks about Top 5 Milano at a hangout, someone will already be arguing over who belongs on it.
Anyone who enjoys friendly debate, good clothes or a bit of bragging will connect with the idea. It suits weekend gatherings and any room where opinions are loud.
