Okmalumkoolkat – iBattery Ft. Nhlanhlaleyo

Promise

Everyone has felt flat at some point, and turns that into a title with iBattery, featuring , from the iTheku eThekwini album.

The word is borrowed from English, and in everyday talk it is used for energy, charge and stamina. People say they are low on battery when they are tired, and full of battery when they are ready for anything. It is a very modern way of describing the human body.

In Nigeria, we use the same picture all the time. A phone at two percent, a generator out of fuel, a friend who says he has no more strength for another night. Light is already a daily conversation, so a title about charge feels very close to home.

The guest on the record adds another voice to the idea. I will not pretend to describe production details I cannot confirm, but Nhlanhlaleyo beside the lead name makes you wonder whether one voice is running low while the other is fully charged, the way friends carry each other through a long night.

That contrast is what I like. A battery can mean power or exhaustion, depending on how you hold it. When somebody says iBattery at midnight, you can never be sure if they are about to leave or about to start dancing.

Anyone who has been drained by a long week, or recharged by good company, will connect with the mood. It suits late nights, long journeys and the moment energy returns when the right song comes on.
