Mbekezeli 1010 – Ushade Ngomlomo
Anybody who has ever been promised marriage with nothing but words will recognise the idea behind Ushade Ngomlomo, the new Mbekezeli 1010 record.
In Zulu, shada refers to getting married, and ngomlomo means by the mouth. Put together, the title reads like marrying someone with talk alone, which is a very familiar story. We all know a person who has been told they will be the wife or husband soon, only for months and years to pass while the ring stays imaginary. In Nigerian terms, it is the sweet talk that never turns into a visit to the family house.
What makes the title interesting is the small humour tucked inside a painful situation. It sounds almost like a joke people would pass around at a gathering, yet anyone living it feels the sting. A song that starts from this angle has a lot of ground to cover, from disappointment to teasing to a straight warning.
The record belongs to the Lawufaka Ilunda album, and a relatable title like this helps the project feel grounded in real relationships and not only in big, abstract themes.
If you have ever waited on a promise that kept getting postponed, you will understand why this subject keeps finding its way into songs. Talk is cheap, and everybody learns that sooner or later.
