Mbekezeli 1010 – Ijuba Lami

Promise

A pet name can say more than a long speech, and leans on one with Ijuba Lami, a Zulu phrase that translates to my dove.

Think about how the word dove is used in everyday talk. People call someone they love their dove because it suggests gentleness, peace and a person who is safe to be around. In many families, it is the name you give a girlfriend, a wife or even a younger sister you are protective of. So the moment you see this title, you already know the song is probably tender, or at least talking about someone who matters a lot.

There is also a small contrast worth noticing. A dove is supposed to be calm, but anybody who has loved someone knows peace is rarely guaranteed. A song built around such a gentle image leaves room for either sweet admiration or a more complicated story about keeping someone close.

On the Lawufaka Ilunda album, a title like this gives the tracklist a softer place to land, and it helps the project feel like a full conversation and not just a set of loud moments.

If you have ever called somebody by a name nobody else is allowed to use, you will understand why a phrase this short can carry so much. It is the kind of record you keep for the person it reminds you of.
