Mawelele – Phakade Ft. Nomfundo Moh
Forever is a big word to throw around in a relationship, and Mawelele puts it right at the front on Phakade, with Nomfundo Moh joining him on the record.
In isiZulu, the word means forever, always, without an end. It is the kind of word people reach for at weddings, in anniversary messages and in prayers for a child they want to see grow old in good health. Even if you do not speak the language, you can sense the weight of it. Some words are made for big promises.
What I find interesting is how big the idea is compared to the everyday life that tests it. Anybody can say forever in the first few months, when messages are fast and every call lasts two hours. The real test comes later, when money is tight and tempers are short. A guest voice on a record like this also gives a promise two sides, which is a good fit for a subject that never belongs to only one person. Hearing a promise like Phakade made by more than one voice changes how seriously you take it.
That is why the theme travels so well across borders. A couple in Abuja, a couple in Durban and a couple in Lagos are all trying to hold on to the same thing. The language changes, but the hope stays the same.
Anyone planning a wedding, celebrating a long marriage or quietly hoping that a new love will last will find something familiar here. It is a record for the moments when you want to say something lasting and cannot find the words yourself.
