Maestro Blink – Slag

Mathew Cooker

Few words sound as rough as their subject here, with using Slag for a Viking-style entry on Ash and Iron Album.

Slag is the unwanted material separated from metal during the smelting process. It is what remains after useful metal has been drawn from the raw material. That gives the title an unusual position within a collection focused on iron and the forge. Instead of naming the valuable result, it points towards what gets left behind.

That choice makes the song feel connected to the less celebrated side of metalworking. Every finished object has a process behind it, and that process produces waste as well as something useful. In the world suggested by Ash and Iron, slag belongs on the floor of the workshop, near the furnace and among the evidence of repeated hard labour.

There is a bluntness to the word that suits Viking-style music. It does not sound delicate or decorative. It brings to mind heat, heavy material and the rough remains of a demanding process. That gives the track a distinct identity within the album, especially because it focuses on something people would normally overlook when thinking about finished ironwork.
