Lil-Guna – Gangster

The word means different things depending on who is saying it. In Lagos or Abuja, a guy at the motor park can wear it like a badge, a friend can use it to hype you after a good day, and a mother can use it as a warning about the company you keep. That is why a title like Gangster is interesting. It promises attitude before a single line is played, and it leaves room for the artist to decide whether he is boasting, telling a story from the streets, or simply playing with an image.

The album carrying the same name also tells you how much weight this record has in the project. Artists do not usually hand a project’s name to a song they consider filler. It looks like a deliberate choice to put this one at the centre of how the album should be understood, and that makes it the natural place to start for anyone new to Lil-Guna.

There is a small contrast worth noticing too. The stage name starts with “Lil”, yet the title claims a heavy, hard image. That tension between a modest name and a big word is the kind of thing street rap fans in Nigeria enjoy picking apart, and it gives people something to argue about in the comments section.

For anyone who grew up around neighbourhood politics, area boys and big talk at the joint after dark, the subject will feel like familiar ground. It is the sort of record that makes sense in a car with friends, at a hangout, or on a long ride home when you want something with a bit of swagger.
