Kota Embassy – Boitshepo Baka Ft. Dj Mremz, Ivy Beatz, Nkateko Tshabalala & Nimrod Pitso
Faith and family run through many of our songs, and Kota Embassy goes in that direction with Boitshepo Baka, featuring DJ Mremz, Ivy Beatz, Nkateko Tshabalala and Nimrod Pitso.
In Setswana, “boitshepo” refers to holiness or sacredness, and “baka” means “my”. The title therefore reads like “my holiness” or “my sacred one”. It can speak to a person who is deeply cherished, a prayerful moment or someone you treat with absolute respect. That range makes it feel serious without being heavy.
Nigerians understand this kind of language well. We have praise names, pet names and titles of honour for people who matter in our lives, and calling someone sacred is just another way of saying they are precious. It is warm, a little dramatic and completely sincere.
Four collaborators appear on the credits, and they are all familiar from other parts of Grootman Series II. That repetition gives the album a sense of community, like a choir where the same voices come back at different moments.
The record suits quiet, thoughtful settings, such as a Sunday morning, a wedding reception or a moment alone when you want to think about the people who hold your life together.
