Khaya Mthethwa – Simbathise (Live)

Promise

A single word can serve as a call to stand together, and uses one on Simbathise, recorded live for the Art & Worship II The Encounter project.

In isiZulu, the word sounds like an instruction, something close to hold us fast or make us hold on. It is a request addressed upward, asking for strength to stay firm when things try to pull a person away. The wording is simple, yet it carries the weight of someone who knows they cannot manage alone.

That plea is very familiar. Many of us have prayed for the strength to keep going through a bad season, a failing business, a sick relative or a faith that felt thin. In Nigerian churches, prayers like this are often sung slowly and repeated, because repetition is how the heart catches up with the words.

The live format suits such a line. A crowd repeating a plea together turns it into something shared, as though each person is steadying the next. I will not pretend to describe the exact arrangement I cannot confirm, but worship in this style usually leaves room for the room to carry the chorus without needing instructions.

There is also a gentle humility in it. Asking to be held is an honest admission that strength runs out. By the time a friend asks you to send Simbathise on a heavy day, you will understand it is not really about the song at all.

Anyone who is tired, stretched or simply trying not to let go will see themselves in the idea. It suits late nights, early prayers and the quiet stretch after a difficult week.
