Halle – Don’t Leave
Two small words can carry an entire plea, and don’t leave by Halle is built on exactly that.
It is the sentence people say at airports, at doorways and at the end of phone calls they are not ready to finish. It can be said by a lover, a child or a friend, and in every case it comes from the same place, the fear of being left alone. Nothing about it is clever, and that is why it hits so directly.
I like how it contrasts with other titles on the project. Some of them are playful or reflective, while this one is almost naked. There is no metaphor, no colour, no imagery, only a request. In real life, that is how most of us speak when we are truly afraid of losing someone.
The record is on love?… or something like it (Deluxe), and it feels like one of the emotional centres of the tracklist. An album about doubts in love will eventually reach the point where doubt becomes begging, and the title shows that moment clearly.
It is a record for the minute before someone steps out the door, when you are still deciding whether to say it out loud.
