Chella – Pretty Nun
Some titles set two opposite pictures side by side, and Chella does exactly that with Pretty Nun, a phrase that makes you stop and read it twice.
A nun is a woman who has given her life to prayer, discipline and service, and the word usually brings to mind a quiet convent, a habit and a calm, serious face. Add the word pretty and the picture shifts. Suddenly there is attraction, charm and a bit of tension in what was meant to be a sacred image. That clash is the whole appeal of the title.
Nigerians will understand why it lands. Many of us grew up around convent schools, mission hospitals and Sisters who ran things with a firm hand, and everybody had a story about one who was strict and another who was surprisingly warm. A pretty nun is also a very familiar joke, the kind of remark made at a wedding or a parish event when somebody catches a glance they were not supposed to notice.
What I find interesting is how many readings the title allows. It could be a love song about someone untouchable, a playful tease about temptation, or a look at the gap between how a person appears and what she feels inside. I will not pretend to describe production details or lyrics I cannot confirm, but a title like this suggests a record with a bit of mischief and a bit of longing, the sort of subject that works well in a soft, close voice.
There is also a small honesty in it. Attraction to what seems out of reach is one of the oldest feelings there is, and people rarely admit it plainly. By the time a friend smiles and asks if you have heard Pretty Nun, you will probably already be guessing which side of the story they are on.
Anyone who has ever liked someone they were told they should not, or enjoys a song with a wink inside it, will see themselves in the idea. It suits slow evenings, late drives and any conversation where somebody finally admits who they have been thinking about.
