Blackshikisha – Dont Do It Ft. C-Blak & Siyabonga Skhondo
Warnings come in all kinds of forms, and Dont Do It reads like one before you even press play. Blackshikisha teams up with C-Blak and Siyabonga Skhondo on it, from the Music Take Control EP.
Think about where you usually hear those words. A mother says them when a child reaches for the hot pot. A friend says them when you are about to send that late-night message to an ex. An elder says them with a long look before you make a decision you cannot undo. It is a short sentence, but it carries love, concern and a bit of frustration all at once.
That makes the title a strong starting point for a song. It sets up a relationship between two people, one who is about to act and one who is trying to stop them, and listeners can easily place themselves on either side. Sometimes you are the one giving advice, and sometimes you are the one who should have listened.
Having C-Blak and Siyabonga Skhondo on the record along with Blackshikisha brings extra voices to that situation, so the advice may not come from just one direction. On an EP named Music Take Control, a song about choosing restraint also makes sense, because real control often begins with knowing when to stop.
Anyone who has ignored good advice and paid for it will find something familiar here.
