Babyfxce E – Get Higher

Promise

Some titles can be read two ways at once, and Get Higher from Detroit rapper is a good example of that.

On one side, “higher” is about climbing. It is the language of ambition, of wanting a bigger bank balance, a better address and a life that looks different from the one you started with. On the other side, rap listeners know the phrase also gets used for a mood, the kind of lift people chase when they want to forget the week for a while. The title does not choose between the two, and that is what makes it interesting to think about.

Anybody who has been through a stressful season will understand why both meanings appeal. We hear it in everyday talk too. A man says “I am going up” when he means his business is growing, and another says “I need to rise above this” when he is tired of a situation. Wanting to be higher is basically wanting to leave the heaviness behind, and that feeling does not belong to Detroit alone. It is just as real in Abuja traffic as it is on a Michigan street corner.

There is also a nice link with the previous record from Babyfxce E, since that one pictured success as a ride above the ground and this one talks about continuing upward. Whether the two were planned as companions I cannot say, but they sit well in the same conversation about rising.

It is a record for early ambition, late-night thinking and anyone who refuses to accept that where they are today is where they will stay.
