Amabongwa – Ungobese

Promise

Short commands carry a lot of authority in Zulu, and picks one that sounds like a gentle warning with Ungobese, from the Ingwe album.

The title sounds like a person telling someone not to do something, or not to become something. The tone depends on who is speaking. A parent may say it to a child, a friend may say it to a friend who is about to make a mistake, and a partner may say it in the middle of an argument. Same words, very different feelings.

That flexibility is what makes the idea interesting. Everybody has had someone tell them not to go down a particular road. Sometimes we listen, sometimes we do not, and sometimes we realise much later that the person was right. In Nigerian homes, this kind of advice often arrives at the dinner table, in the middle of a Sunday, or in a long phone call from an elder who has seen it all before.

I will not pretend to describe production details I cannot confirm, but the direct address in the wording tells you the record talks to someone rather than about someone. That makes it personal. The listener is placed in the position of the person being advised, and that is a more intimate place than a general story.

There is also a quiet love in warnings. People do not bother to tell you to stop unless they care. When a friend finally says Ungobese to you, they may be doing it because they have watched you head toward trouble and could not stay silent.

Anyone who has been given advice they did not want, or has given advice they hoped would be heard, will see themselves here. It suits the reflective evening, when you replay old warnings and understand them better.
