Cojo Rae – Aberanteɛ

Promise

Names of the young carry a lot of respect in Akan culture, and picks one with Aberanteɛ, from the Gen Z Highlife album.

The word means a young man, usually one who is strong, energetic and growing into his role in the community. In many Ghanaian settings, a young man is expected to work, support the family and carry himself with dignity. The word is used with pride, and sometimes with a gentle push to behave.

That fits an album named after a generation. A title about being a young man suggests a record that looks at youth from the inside, with its pride, pressure and ambition. Nigerians will relate, because our own young men carry similar expectations, from school fees to family needs.

I will not describe the lyrics, since I cannot confirm them, but the title suggests a story of growing up. By the time a friend asks what Aberanteɛ means, you may find yourself talking about your own journey to adulthood.

Anyone who remembers the pressure of becoming a man will see themselves here. It suits reflective evenings and conversations with older brothers.
