THULUBUKE – Into Yeyingane Ft. Sne Ntuli
Childhood has its own rules, and THULUBUKE borrows that world on Into Yeyingane, featuring Sne Ntuli, from the INHLABATHI EPHALISHINI album.
The title means something belonging to a child, or a child’s thing. It could point to a toy, a matter that only a young person would care about, or a simple way of saying the matter is not serious. Tone decides everything. Said gently, it is tender, and said sharply, it is a dismissal.
Nigerians use similar language. A parent may say a quarrel is child’s play, or tell an adult not to behave like a child. At the same time, children’s things hold deep memories, like a favourite toy, a school bag or a game played in the yard until the sun went down.
I will not pretend to describe production details I cannot confirm, but a title like this suggests a record about innocence, family or simplicity. Having Sne Ntuli on the credits also adds a second voice, and it makes you wonder whether it answers the main voice with advice or with memory.
The double meaning is what makes it interesting. It can honour childhood or mock immaturity. By the time a friend says Into Yeyingane about a silly argument, you will know exactly which meaning they intend.
Anyone who misses childhood, or has been told to grow up, will recognise the mood. It suits family visits, old photographs and evenings of remembering simpler days.
