Umfoka Msezane – Izibotho
Closing a project with something earthy is a smart move, and Umfoka Msezane does it with Izibotho, the last song on the Awulith’ qheke album.
The word is isiZulu for ties or bonds, whether they are family links, friendships or the knots that hold a community together. It is a plain idea with a lot of weight, because everybody carries a few of these in their lives.
In Nigeria, we know how strong those bonds can be. Extended families share duties, neighbours look after children, and a friend from school can become a relative by choice. At the same time, those ties can feel heavy when expectations pile up and nobody asks what you want.
I will not pretend to describe production details I cannot confirm, but a title like this suggests a record about belonging, loyalty and the obligations that come with it. It would be a fitting way to finish an album, since many songs before it speak about people and how they treat each other.
That double meaning is the interesting part. Bonds can hold you up or hold you back, and often both on the same day. By the time a friend says Izibotho in a thoughtful moment, they may be thinking about who they owe and who owes them.
Anyone who has felt the pull of family, or the comfort of a friend who stayed, will see themselves here. It suits the end of a long week, when you remember who is really in your corner.
