Umfoka Msezane – Awulith’ qheke (Album)

Promise

Some album names sound like a friend nudging you off your seat, and goes for that feeling with Awulith’ qheke, a twelve-track project.

The wording has the rhythm of street talk, a playful instruction thrown at someone who is sitting too quietly at a lively gathering. Nigerians have plenty of lines like that. Every family function has the uncle or auntie who will not let anybody stay glued to their chair, and a title in that voice sets the mood before a single song begins.

What I find interesting is how wide the track list runs. It moves from the healer in Udokotela to the joy of Injabulo, from the plain confession of Ngyakuthanda to the sharp family question in Wanqabelani ukuzala. Then it turns to personal honesty in Iqiniso lami, a worship setting in Inkonzoni, and the ties that bind people in Izibotho. That is a lot of everyday life in one project, from the clinic to the church to the living room.

The guest list also deserves a mention. Jiki, Shenge wasehlalankosi, Limit, Londeka Shangase, Limit Nala, Qhawelisha, Mshawodi and Mzukulu all appear across the album. I will not describe production details I cannot confirm, but a project shared with that many voices feels like a crowd gathered in one yard, with the host passing the microphone around and everybody adding something of their own.

There is a small contrast worth noticing. Calling an album Awulith’ qheke sounds like a party command, yet the songs touch on faith, family pressure and love, subjects people take seriously. Mixing fun and weight is very Naija in spirit, since we dance through hard times and pray in the same breath. Someone will probably tell you about the album at a hangout and then spend ten minutes arguing about which track is the best.

Anyone who enjoys music that talks about home, church, relationships and community in plain language will find something to connect with here. It suits weekend gatherings, long drives and evenings when the whole room wants a reason to move.
