Amabongwa – Phenduka
Change often begins with one word that tells you to turn, and Amabongwa closes the set with Phenduka, from the Ingwe album.
In isiZulu, the word means turn around or change direction. It can be literal, like turning back on a road, or personal, like turning away from a habit, a relationship or a plan that has stopped working. A single word, but it carries a whole decision.
That is what makes it so relatable. Everybody has a moment when they realise they have been walking the wrong way. It could be a job that drains you, a friend who pulls you down or a version of yourself you have outgrown. In Nigerian conversation, we say it plainly: you have to know when to go back and start again. Pride often makes that hard.
I will not pretend to describe production details I cannot confirm, but placing a word like this at the end of an album gives it a reflective weight. It feels like a closing thought, a gentle push to the listener to take what they have heard and make a change in their own life.
There is also a quiet hope in it. Turning around is not defeat. It is a sign that someone is still paying attention to where they are going. By the time somebody says Phenduka to you in a serious moment, it may be the advice you needed.
Anyone standing at a crossroads, wondering whether to continue or change course, will see themselves in the idea. It suits the early morning after a long night of thinking, when a new direction finally looks possible.
