Amabongwa – Emkhuze
Some titles sound like a place you have to be taken to by someone who knows the way, and Amabongwa opens the Ingwe album with Emkhuze.
The word is Zulu, and it points to a quiet corner, a place tucked away from the noise. In a family compound it might be the shaded spot behind the house where elders sit and talk. In a city it could be the one bar or bench where people know your name and nobody asks questions. Most of us have a place like that, even if we have never given it a name.
What I like about the idea is how much it says about privacy. Nigerians live close together, with neighbours, relatives and market women all in each other’s business, so a hidden corner is precious. It is where gist is shared properly, where arguments are settled softly and where a tired person can finally exhale.
Being part of the Ingwe album also puts it in a project named after the leopard, an animal known for moving quietly and staying out of sight. I will not pretend to describe production details I cannot confirm, but a title about a secluded place beside an album title about a hidden predator suggests a world where stillness and strength sit together.
That pairing is what makes the idea stay in the mind. By the time a friend asks where you go to switch off, you may find yourself describing your own Emkhuze without even meaning to.
Anyone who has needed a quiet place to think, mourn, plan or simply rest will understand the picture. It suits the late afternoon, when the day has done its worst and a little peace is all you want.
