Umfoka Msezane – Udokotela Ft. Jiki, Shenge wasehlalankosi

The word is the isiZulu form of doctor, and it can mean more than one thing. It might be the man in a white coat at the clinic, or it might point to the traditional healer people visit when a problem feels bigger than medicine. Either way, a doctor is the person you go to when something is wrong and you want it fixed.

That makes it a rich idea for a song. In Nigeria we have the same double life of the word. There is the hospital doctor and the herbalist at the roadside, and many families have consulted both on the same matter. Trust in a healer is deeply personal, and everybody has a story about the one person who finally got to the root of a problem.

The two guests add more voices to the subject. I will not pretend to describe production details I cannot confirm, but a record with Jiki and Shenge wasehlalankosi credited beside the lead name suggests a shared conversation, perhaps about who heals what, and who needs healing.

There is also a gentle joke possible in the title, since the best doctor in many stories is the friend who tells you the truth. By the time somebody says Udokotela at a hangout, they may be teasing a friend about being everybody’s advisor.

Anyone who has carried a problem for too long and finally found the right person to talk to will see the picture. It suits quiet evenings, when you admit what has been hurting and decide to look for help.
